Each year CMC hosts Saturday quarterly crew days to enable individuals who work full time a chance to volunteer for hiking trail maintenance. All are welcome. Volunteers with little to no trail work experience are paired with experienced maintainers. In 2023, CMC has selected Sam Knob as the work site. There are plenty of opportunities to help improve this iconic WNC trail.

We had 54 amazing volunteers join us for our 3rd Quarterly Crew Day at Sam Knob on Saturday! We built or added to eight rock staircases, restored over 400 yards of trail, built two large cribbing walls to support the trail over steep terrain, weed-wacked the whole trail, and added a very large water diversion which will help protect our efforts from being washed away. This amounted to 378 combined volunteer hours which calculates to a value of $11,340 contributed to our Public Lands.
Thank you Joe Benge, Les love, and Chris Werbylo for coordinating this day! A huge shoutout to our group leaders for lending their trail expertise: Linda Blue, John Busse, Paul Curtin, Ed DiSalvo, Rich Evans, Peter Eisman, Bob Fuller, Ken Hummel, Les Love, Kit Ogburn, Skip Sheldon, Ron Walther, Tom Weaver, and Chris Werbylo.
A special thank you to the following crews for your tremendous prep work leading up to Saturday!

We had perfect weather on June 3rd for our second quarterly crew day at Sam Knob!
51 volunteers worked on 14 sites over an 800 feet section of trail. Projects included ladder steps, rock steps, wood steps, turnpike, and tread work. Those 100 plus hikers, who summited the trail while we were working, got a first hand look at how our trails are maintained. Thank you all for your great work!
